(Outside) Cold call

우리말로 하면 텔레 마케팅 쯤? 하지만 Job description에 
Sales people 구인 광고에도 자주 쓰이는 걸로 봐선 우리나라보다는 덜 부정적인 어감인 듯 하다.
(그래도 여전히 ethically questionable practice)

마케팅 목적으로 모르는 사람에게 전화를 거는 것을 cold call 이라고 한다.

아래의 예문을 보자.
회사의 HR 담당 부서에 전화를 걸어 (물론 이 사람과 당신은 서로 모르는 사이)
인턴십 자리가 있느냐 하고 묻는 것도 cold call이다. 

What does "cold call" mean? Such as (applying for) an internship at a company?

Do yourself a favor and find another internship. Unless you want people being rude all day long on the phone to you, it won't be fun.

I just reread your comment. If someone told you to cold call a company for an intership, that means you just call up their HR or hiring office and ask if they are looking for interns. In that respect, it isn't nearly as bad. I actually hired two interns for doing that to me since it showed initiaitive.
